LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian kicked off RMAC play with a home opening doubleheader against Fort Lewis on Sunday. The Cougars dominated game one with a 15-0 win, then brought some late heroics for a walkoff 6-4 victory in the second contest.
GAME ONE
All Star Park was buzzing with energy as opening day began with some major fireworks from the Cougars offense. The scoring began in the second with an RBI single from Samaria Roope. Kayla Middleton then doubled to score Kaelin Morkisch and Kenzie Middleton singled to bring home her twin sister.
Miki Berg broke things wide open in the third, uncorking a huge three-run blast to make it 6-0. Sydney Reamer left no doubt about the outcome, joining her teammate with another three-run shot in the fourth. Piper Lujan blasted another homer, this time a two-run blast. Several triples later made the score 15-0 Cougars heading to the fifth.
Alexis Hamilton picked up her fourth win of the year in convincing fashion, allowing just three hits over five shutout innings in a run-rule victory. Reamer and Berg led their squad with three RBI in the contest, while Kenzie Middleton drew two walks for her team.
GAME TWO
The second contest of the day was a much harder fight for the Cougars as the Skyhawks played much tougher throughout. Colorado Christian took the early 1-0 lead as Sami Edwards picked up an RBI double. Fort Lewis responded with a run in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The Cougars did not waver however, tying it back up with a Kenzie Middleton double, Edwards double and Taylor Olsen single to make it 4-4 after four innings of play.
The two teams battled back and forth into extra innings with neither team being able to score despite several chances with runners on third base. Abrie Castillo dazzled in the late innings, getting out of a bases-loaded no out jam to give her team a chance to walk it off. The Cougars obliged in the bottom of the 10th as Kenzie Middleton cranked a two-run shot to center-field to send the fans home happy with a 6-4 victory.
Abrie Castillo picked up the win with an efficient 6.2 innings pitched allowing just four hits and walking no runners along with eight strikeouts. Kenzie Middleton was the hero of game two, coming in clutch for her team with three RBI on three hits, while Sami Edwards went a perfect 5-5 in the contest with two RBI.
UP NEXT- The Cougars will be back in action at All Star Park on February 28 with another doubleheader against Fort Lewis at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
