Baseball Falls in Finale at Mines

CCU took the field in Golden, CO on Sunday afternoon as they wrapped up their four-game series with the Colorado School of Mines. The Cougars were looking to win the finale and secure a split for the series, but unfortunately Mines was able to battle back and defeat the Cougs by a final score of 5-4

Colorado Christian was able to seize control and the lead early in the game as they scored the first runs in the top of the second inning. Jordan Medina started the inning off with a bang as he delivered homerun over the right field fence to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Caden Walton and Cole Douglass singled which gave Major Maydon an opportunity. Maydon delivered as he the first pitch over the right center field fence for a three-run homerun to extend their lead to 4-0.

Cameron Spaeth got the start on the mound for Colorado Christian and was cruising early on. Through four innings of work, Spaeth had given up just three hits and no runs. He ran into some trouble in the fifth inning as he gave up two runs to cut the Cougar lead down to 4-2 before being relieved by Saxton Sorenson. Sorenson worked out of the fifth inning without any further damage and worked a scoreless sixth inning. Mines once again scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning which tied the game up 4-4.

The Colorado School of Mines pitching staff was able to rebound after the Cougars first inning and went on to hold CCU scoreless for the final eight innings of the game. The Orediggers were able to push across the go ahead and eventual game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. CCU attempted to make a comeback in the ninth inning as they were able to load the bases with just one out, but a double play prevented the tying run to score and ended the game.

CCU now has an overall record of 7-17 and 5-7 in conference play. The team will now travel to Pueblo, CO next weekend to take part in a series against both CSU-Pueblo and Metro State. Game number one is scheduled for Friday April 1st at 4PM MST and will be against Metro State. Saturday will be a doubleheader with one game against Metro and one against CSU-Pueblo. The series will conclude on Sunday April 3rd with a single game against the Thunderwolves.
