LAKEWOOD,CO- Colorado Christian looked to make it 23 straight wins with a doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines on Sunday. The Cougars swept the four-game series emphatically, slamming eight home runs in game one to set a program record as they won both contests 15-6 and 19-3.
GAME ONE
It was a windy day at All Star Park, and the Cougars used that to their advantage early and often. Kenzie Middleton led the game off with a solo homer, and Sami Edwards came up and blasted another solo shot to make it 2-0 immediately. Taylor Olsen ripped a two-run blast later in the inning to give her team a 4-0 lead heading to the second.
The home run party continued, as Miki Berg led off the second with a big fly, followed by another homer from Edwards, this time a two-run blast as the lead grew to 7-0. Samaria Roope ripped a ground rule double to left field to score two more, and Berg came back up to bat and ripped a two RBI double to make it 11-0.
The Orediggers put two on the board in the third, but the Cougars offense was not done quite yet. Piper Lujan doubled in the third to make it 12-2, and Roope homered in the fourth to tie the program record for a single game withsix homers total. Kenzie Middleton then stepped up and broke the record, blasting her second home run of the game. Edwards pushed the record to eight, blasting her third homer of the game as the Cougars run-ruled Mines 15-6.
Alexis Hamilton hit 15 wins on the year with four innings of work with two strikeouts and just two runs allowed.
GAME TWO
The Orediggers struck first in the second contest, scoring a run in their first at bats to take the early lead. Colorado Christian would respond, starting with a two-run single from Lujan. Kayla Middleton then smacked a double to make it 3-1, and Berg brought home two with another double as the score stood at 5-1 heading to the second inning.
Kayla Middleton drew a bases loaded walk to score a run in the second before Logan Menzies came to the plate and absolutely crushed a towering grand slam to center field. Lujan tacked on a three-run blast as the hits continued to come easily for the Cougars. Kayla Middleton capped the game with a solo blast as Colorado Christian ran away with a 19-3 victory.
Abrie Castillo picked up her 14th victory of the year with four innings of work with just two runs allowed. Julie Katz sealed the deal, pitching the fifth and final inning with a strikeout along the way.
UP NEXT- The Cougars will now head to Adams State for a doubleheader on April 15 with the first contest slated for 12 p.m.
