UCCS Beats CCU in Finale

Colorado Christian took the field on Saturday for the series finale game against UC-Colorado Springs. Just like the other games in the series, CCU took the lead early, but they were unable to hang onto it and eventually fell by a final score of 19-11. Despite a strong offensive showing over the weekend as they scored 34 runs over the four-game series, the Cougars were unable to get a win as they were swept by UCCS.

Frankie Shearn got things started for the Cougars in the top of the first inning as he singled to left field. That brought up Wyatt Crenshaw who promptly doubled down the leftfield line which allowed Shearn to come around and score the first run of the game to give CCU the early 1-0 lead. UCCS immediately answered back in the bottom of the first as they were able to score two runs and snatch the lead away from CCU. After Colorado Christian was held scoreless in the second inning, UCCS extended their lead by scoring three more runs to take a 5-1 lead heading into the third inning.

Frankie Shearn once again got the inning started off as he walked and then stole second base. Jordan Medina came up and singled sharply through the left side of the infield which allowed Shearn to move up to third. Luke Thompson followed Medina with another single to score Shearn. Russell Cruz followed with the Cougars third single in a row which scored Jordan Medina. Gabe Ramos collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Luke Thompson and brought CCU back within one as the score sat at 5-4.

The score remained 5-4 until the bottom of the fifth when UCCS was able to take advantage of a Cougar error to extend their lead. They eventually scored three runs in the inning to lead 8-4. They were not finished adding to their lead after they held CCU scoreless in the top of the sixth they scored four more runs to make the score 12-4 in favor of UCCS.

Colorado Christian got themselves back into the game in the seventh inning which began with Luke Thompson doubling down the leftfield line and Russell Cruz followed with a walk. With two runners on base, Gabe Ramos singled through the right side to score Thompson and advance Cruz to third base. Major Maydon came up next and ripped an RBI double down the leftfield line to score Cruz and move Ramos to third. Kade Carney singled next allowing Ramos and Maydon to bring CCU back to within four as the score was now 12-8.

Unfortunately for CCU, sevens were wild for UCCS in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Mountain Lions put the game out of reach as they tallied seven runs on seven hits in the seventh to take a 19-8 lead heading into the final two innings of play.

Colorado Christian came to bat in the ninth inning and still showed fight as they were able to score three more runs. Frankie Shearn collected two RBI on a double which scored Kade Carney and Caden Walton who had both walked earlier in the inning. Luke Thompson earned a RBI the hard way as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Frankie Shearn for the Cougs 11th run of the game.

With the loss today, the Cougars record now sits at 12-24 overall, and 8-12 in conference play. They will be looking to get back on track beginning with their next game on Tuesday April 19th as they head up to Greeley to take on the University of Northern Colorado for a non-conference matchup. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 3PM MST. CCU will return back to RMAC play during the weekend as CSU-Pueblo will be coming to Lakewood to face off with CCU at All Star Park.
