Comeback Caps Impressive Victory and Series Win Over Mesa

LAKEWOOD,CO- Colorado Christian played the last game of their final home series on Sunday afternoon against Mesa, and they gave the home fans quite the performance. A comeback in the sixth helped them to an 8-5 victory and 3-1 series win. This marks the first time the Cougars have won a series against a nationally ranked opponent as the Mavericks came into the weekend at number seven in the top 25 rankings for division two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saxton Sorenson got the start on the mound, and he got into trouble early in the first with a three-run homer from Mesa to snag the early lead. However, he settled down from there, tossing four scoreless innings in an impressive effort that kept his team within striking distance.

After a lot of traffic on the basepaths throughout the game, Colorado Christian got on the scoreboard in the fourth with an RBI single from Kade Carney to score Major Maydon. A solo homer from the Mavericks made it 4-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth, but the Cougars had a comeback on their minds.

A walk, single and error loaded the bases, and Frankie Shearn drew another walk to score a run. Wyatt Crenshaw and Jordan Medina then picked up consecutive sacrifice flies as the latter tied the game at four apiece. Gabe Ramos capped the inning with a massive two-run blast to right field to set the stands and dugout into a frenzy as the Cougars took their first lead of the game at 6-4.

Tyler Fischer entered in the seventh with the bases full of Mavericks, allowing just one run with a pair of strikeouts to end the threat and keep the lead for his team. Colorado Christian picked up some insurance in the eighth, starting with an RBI double from Maydon to score Ramos who had doubled earlier in the inning. A Mesa error stretched the lead to 8-5 heading to the ninth.

Fischer was efficient to close out the game and pick up the save, allowing just a single and striking out the best hitter for the Mavericks looking to end the ballgame with a final of 8-5. It was the senior Fischer's final game at All Star Park as he closed out his last game at home in style, taking down the conference's top team.

UP NEXT- The Cougars will look to qualify for the RMAC Tournament as they play their final regular season series at MSU Denver, with the first game on May 6 slated for 12 p.m.
