Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Dave Land

Soccer Seals First Victory

The Cougars took to the pitch on Saturday evening for their second game of the season as they squared off with Southwest Baptist University. The game took place in Bethany, OK which is the same field in which they earned a draw to begin the year on Thursday against DBU.

It was a dominant first half for the Cougs as they controlled everything for the first 45 minutes of the game. CCU had several scoring chances throughout the half and continually applied pressure which allowed them to take 11 shots versus just one from SBU. With the score still tied with 17 minutes left to play in the half, Gabe Roloff substituted into the game for the first time which turned out to be the momentum shift the Cougars needed.

With nine minutes left in the first half, the Roloff brothers got together and gave the Cougars their first goal of the season. Grant Roloff delivered a pass into the middle of the box where Gabe Roloff was waiting and promptly delivered the ball into the back of the net past the SBU Goalkeeper to put CCU up 1-0. A lead that would remain to conclude the first half.

Heading into the second, Gabe Roloff didn't waste any time to build onto their lead as he netted his second goal of the game just 13 seconds into the half. Goal number three was beautiful as Grant Roloff sent the ball deep into Southwest Baptist territory where Silas Hess gained control and centered the ball to Adrian Diez who flipped the ball over the Goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

With just over one minute remaining, SBU was able to breakaway and sneak a goal past GK Chris Alexander, but it was too little too late as CCU went on to win by the final score of 3-1 which secured their first win of the season and improved their record to 1-0-1 early in the year.

Head Coach Brad Camp spoke after the game and said, "Super excited for the win. We caught them on a bad day, and they had a few injuries, but the boys made the most of their opportunity and came out, pressed, and ran hard with a lot of enthusiasm. We were really excited to see that much of the ball and use our possession well to be dangerous and threatening. We were thrilled to get all 27 players in the game, and even though we conceded a goal late with some of our younger players on the field, it gave them valuable experience for the future. Now we have to get ready, we are not a finished product by a long way, we have a lot of work to do on the ball, and a lot more mental toughness to instill."

With the first weekend of play in the books, the Cougars will set their sights on their next matchup where they will faceoff against Upper Iowa University on Thursday September 1st. Kickoff is set for 5PM MST and the game will be hosted in Fayette, IA.
