Colorado Christian Snag First Win of the Year

GOLDEN, CO- The Cougars finished play at the Oredigger Classic with a pair of matches against RMAC competition on Saturday. They picked up their first win of the year in the morning game, sweeping Western Colorado in an impressive display before falling to a strong Colorado Mesa squad in their final game of the tournament. 

GAME ONE
The Cougars started strong in set one, jumping ahead 12-7 on a kill from Lilly Woods. They continued to stretch the lead, going up 16-8 on an ace from Madelyn Long. Libby Goodman continued her strong play at the tournament with consecutive kills to close the set out 25-16. 

Set two was a bit closer as Western Colorado played competitively throughout. Colorado Christian began to pull away late in the set as a kill from Renee Phillips made it 18-13. Savannah Overson slammed one home for a 23-17 lead and Goodman again closed out the set with a kill 25-20.

The two teams battled in the third set as Abigail Newell put down a ball for the 17-13 lead. A late five point run from the Cougars put things out of reach at 21-13. Phillips finished the match with a kill as Colorado Christian earned the sweep 25-19. 

GAME TWO
Taking on a tough Colorado Mesa team in the second competition of the day, the Cougars kept things close. Newell put down a kill for an early 8-6 lead, but the Mavericks went on a run to jump ahead 19-12. Despite a late push from Colorado Christian, Mesa finished off the first set 25-21.

The Mavericks jumped ahead early and did not look back in the second set. After pushing to a 20-12 lead, Mesa closed out the set by a final score of 25-15.

The Cougars kept things competitive in the final set, going ahead 12-11 midway through. Phillips made things tight with another kill to knot the score at 15. The Mavericks took control from there, closing the set strong to pick up the sweep with a set score of 25-20. 

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Libby Goodman was named to the all tournament team after slamming 38 kills over the two days of competition

  • Izzy Jones got off to a strong start to the season with 114 assists through four matches

  • Libero Madelyn Long paced the Cougars with 45 digs through two days of play


UP NEXT- Colorado Christian will continue play with their home opener on August 30 at 7p.m. against Angelo State University.
