Colorado Christian took the field on Friday afternoon to square off against South Dakota Mines in a non-conference game. The Cougars took the lead in the 20
th minute of the first half, and never relinquished it as they were able to defeat the Hardrockers by a final score of 3-2.
Â
It was a tightly contested game throughout the start of the first half, then
Miguel Fonseca broke the scoreless tie as he netted his second goal of the season in the 20
th minute. In a two on one situation
Adrian Diez placed a perfect pass to the streaking
Miguel Fonseca who promptly sent the ball past the Hardrockers goalie and into the back of the net to put CCU up 1-0. Â The rest of the first half remained a defensive battle as neither side was able to make any other moves offensively.
Â
Just four minutes into the second half, SDM scored the equalizer goal to tie things up 1-1, but then just three minutes later the Cougars regained the lead thanks to the first goal of the year from
Lucca Casci. Colorado Christian stretched their lead to 3-1 in the 70
th minute when
Arthur Santana scored his first goal of the year thanks to an assist from
Miguel Fonseca.
Â
South Dakota Mines did everything they could to get back into the game as they cut their deficit in half with just over ten minutes to play, but the Cougs were able to tighten up on defense and prevent them from getting any closer as they held on to win by the final score of 3-2.
Â
Head coach
Brad Camp spoke after the game and said, I am proud of the boys in their effort today. We respect South Dakota Mines a lot, the coaching staff and their players, so we knew it was never going to be an easy tie or an easy win. I was really proud to be able to pull it out in the end. Huge shout out to a couple of our new guys who got on the field today and really demonstrated that they can help us score goals. Now we have a really tough game on Sunday and our thought are on that."
Â
Colorado Christian will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, as they hit the road to take on the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The game is scheduled to begin at 12PM MST. Â
