LACEY, WA- The Cougars headed to Washington to kick off a four-game tournament with a pair of contests on Friday. Colorado Christian fell to the hosts Saint Martins before sweeping Adelphi University in a strong bounce back performance.
GAME ONE
Libby Goodman got the Cougars going with a kill to put her team up 7-5. The Saints then went on a run to take the lead 13-10 midway through the set. The hosts continued to stretch the lead as they claimed the first set by a score of 25-19.
Saint Martins jumped ahead quickly in set two, going on a run to take an early 11-4 advantage. Alli Douglass and Goodman helped the Cougars get back to 15-11 and later an ace from Jessa Rose pulled Colorado Christian to within 18-17. A seven point run from the Saints gave them the set though at 25-17.
The third set started well for the Cougars as Savannah Overson put down a kill for the 6-3 lead. A Saints run again made the set close as they took a 16-14 lead later in the set. The set then became tight as the two teams battled back and forth. Douglass slammed a kill to make it 23-22 in favor of Saint Martins, but the hosts closed the final two points to pick up the sweep 25-22.
GAME TWO
Goodman had a game to remember against Adelphi University. She started early with a pair of kills to put her team up 7-3, and later slammed one home for a 14-11 lead. Renee Phillips got in on the action with a kill to push the Cougars ahead 18-13. Lilly Woods and Goodman took over late in the set, securing the final four points for their team with kills for the 25-18 set win.Â
The second set was much more competitive, but Douglass slammed a kill for a 16-14 lead. Two more Douglass kills made it 20-15 and Woods put things away 25-18 with a kill.Â
Looking for the sweep, Colorado Christian jumped ahead 4-0 early with consecutive aces from Madelyn Long. A Phillips kill and several errors put the Cougars ahead 11-4, and Izzy Jones put down a kill for a 17-10 advantage. Goodman took over from there, recording four kills to put things out of reach. Anna Merrill tallied a pair of kills as Colorado Chriostian closed out the set and sweep by a score of 25-20. Â
