ALAMOSA, CO- The Cougars opened conference play on Wednesday with a matchup at Adams State. After dropping the first set, Colorado Christian bounced back strong by taking the next three to claim victory in four sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED- The Cougars started the set strong, taking a 6-2 lead on a kill from Savannah Overson. The two teams battled back and forth as the Grizzlies closed the gap towards the end of the set. A four point run from Adams State to close things gave them the set 25-20 as the hosts took a 1-0 set lead.
The hosts jumped ahead 8-4 early in set two, but a flurry of errors from the Grizzlies gave Colorado Christian a 9-8 lead. The Cougar offense began to click as Libby Goodman and Lilly Woods put down kills for a 13-9 lead. Renee Phillips made it set point with a kill, and Goodman finished things off for the set win 25-21.
Woods got her team off to a strong start in set three with a kill for a 7-4 advantage. Goodman put down a trio of kills later in the set as the Cougars drew ahead 15-12. Alli Douglass and Woods tallied consecutive kills as the lead grew to 21-16. Phillips finished things off with a kill as her team took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 set win.
The fourth set was a battle as the hosts looked to force a fifth while Colorado Christian pushed to finish the match. Midway through the set the Grizzlies took a 15-12 advantage, but the Cougars refused to let the set slip away. Douglass drew them level with a kill to tie things at 19 apiece, and a big block from Phillips brought the score to 23-20. A beautifully placed tip into the corner from Izzy Jones brought up match point and Goodman sealed the deal with a kill to close things out with a 25-22 set win.Â
