LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars were back at home on Tuesday evening as they hosted Williams Baptist University inside the CCU Event Center. Led by a strong second half, CCU pulled away for an 84-69 victory over the Eagles.
The game started off slow offensively as both teams saw some quality defense being played. Noah Kon and Bradley Land got the scoring started with some baskets, but the Eagles eventually made their way to a 15-6 lead. Kon drilled a three-pointer to bring his team closer, and Tate Odvody brought his team to within 20-14 at the midway mark of the half.
Michael Bell Jr. turned the momentum in favor of the Cougars with a three and jumper as CCU began to claw their way closer. A smooth pass from Schaferr Reichart to a running CJ Barnes led to a thunderous two-handed dunk from Barnes to tie it up at 37 apiece and start to turn the trajectory of the game. Another three from Bell put his team on top and Reichart closed the half with a pair of free throws to send the hosts into the break with a 42-38 lead.
Bell continued his strong night with a quick layup to start the half, and Jacob Everson hit one from deep for a five point lead. Tanner Hecht got involved from beyond the arc with a three, and baskets from Odvody and Brenden Patrick stretched the lead to 56-44. A Bobby McWard three-pointer fell to make it a 16 point lead, and Bell connected for another jumper for an 18 point advantage. The Eagles cut the deficit to nine with a little over two minutes to play, but that was as close as they would get as Land put the finishing touches with a layup and pair of free throws for the 84-69 victory.
Bell led the offensive efforts with 20 points on 4-7 shooting from beyond the arc, while Kon and Barnes chipped in 10 points. Land pulled down eight rebounds to lead his team, while Kon led in assists with four.
The Cougars will be back at home after Thanksgiving as they host Oklahoma Panhandle State University on November 25 at 5 p.m. MST.
