LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars closed their four-game series with Augustana with a doubleheader on Sunday. In a pair of high scoring affairs, the visitors ultimately came away with a pair of wins in two battles.
GAME ONE
The Vikings got off to a hot start in game one, scoring five runs in the first four innings. CCU responded in the bottom of the fourth, as Jordan Medina and Gabe Ramos hit back-to-back homers to close the gap. Two more runs in the seventh made it 8-4, but the visitors kept hitting to make it 12-4. Medina did not slow doan, cranking another home run in the eighth. A late rally in the ninth fell short as the first contest ended at 17-11 in favor of Augustana.Â
The game featured a multitude of players getting action, with the Vikings sending six different pitchers with the Cougars throwing five.Â
GAME TWO
Augustana got off to another fast start with a three-run homer in the first inning to grab early momentum. Aaron Morgan got his team the momentum right back in the third, blasting a massive grand slam for his first homer of the season and a 4-3 CCU lead. Ross Panlasigui followed with a big home run to make it 5-3 Cougars. Augustana then came back to grab the lead 6-5, but the back and forth was not finished yet. For the second time in one day, Medina and Ramos hit consecutive solo shots, as Medina netted his third homer of the day and gave their team a 7-6 advantage. In the end, the offense was too much from Augustana as they scored six runs in the fifth to finish out a 12-7 victory in a thrilling affair.Â
The long ball was effective all day for the Cougars as they hit seven bombs and scored seven runs on four homers in game two.Â
The Cougars will continue play with a preseason pod with three RMAC teams, starting with an 11 a.m. matchup at MSU Denver on March 3.
