LAKEWOOD, CO- Peyton Jones is a first-year student on the CCU men's golf team where he has been putting up some pretty impressive stats this year, averaging 73 strokes per round, and is only getting started. Peyton is a fantastic athlete and a wonderful asset to CCU athletics, but as you look deeper into his life, you will find there is so much more to him than just a good swing.
When talking with Jones, we began with the basics of who he is and how he fell in love with golf. His immediate response was a heartwarming tip of the hat to his family saying, "Getting into golf, what my family used to do every Sunday since I was about 5 or so, was my dad and a couple uncles would go to the golf course where they would take me with them. I would hit Tee shots and chip or put on the greens every time. I always loved that. I was also playing baseball around 10, but
all I wanted to do was play golf."
Peyton shared his heart for his family, speaking on how supportive they have always been, and talking about how much he appreciates and loves them. Going deeper we began talking about other passions Peyton has outside of the course. "When I was back at home, I started woodworking. I would build tables, bookshelves, and such. I also like coin collecting so for a couple months I would go to the bank and get 4 boxes of pennies and a box of nickels and dimes and look through them. The coolest coin I ever found was a 1868 two cent coin and a whole bunch of Indian pennies from before 1909. I've also found some mercury coins from before somewhere around 1945."
As with many athletes, we couldn't get too far into the conversation without circling back to his love for the game. "I'm a big reader. I am currently reading Your 15th Club by Dr. Bob Rotella. I like reading a lot of golf psychology books. I've read, Golf is a game of Confidence, Putting Out Your Mind, and Golf is not a Game of Perfect by Dr. Bob Rotella. It has helped my golf performance quite a bit. It's helped me strengthen my mental game on the course so my mind is not everywhere. I can be confident in my own game and realize I don't have to focus or worry about anyone else. If you are out on the course saying I suck, I will never be good, or I'm going to blow it in the clutch, even though your conscious brain doesn't think you suck, that's what your subconscious mind is going to try to make you do." When asked what the biggest lesson he has learned since coming to CCU, Jones says "Figuring out why you are and just going for it. In college there are so many guys that seem the same but you just have to find your thing and do it and then learn from there."
Peyton Jones has a big heart for his friends and family and is on a mission to serve the Lord in action on and off the course. Peyton is on the rise in CCU golf and plans to continue to get better for his team and for himself every day physically, mentally, and spiritually, a true representative of CCU Athletics.
