LAKEWOOD, CO- Volleyball is getting prepped for the 2023 season, and they have high hopes for what is to come. With a roster loaded with returning talent and four newcomers, the Cougars have the pieces in place to make a strong push in the RMAC.
Last season saw the Cougars go 15-13 overall, including a 10-8 record in conference play. This gave them the sixth seed in the RMAC tournament, where they fell to a strong Colorado Mesa squad. This season, they will look to up that win total while competing deeper into a conference tournament that just might be the toughest in all of Division II.Â
Head Coach Bobby Blanken is ready for the challenge of a new season and is already impressed by the team culture.Â
"The culture at present is awesome! Girls connect well and are excited for the challenge of a new season. It feels extra special with the strong core we have as well," Blanken said.Â
With consistent finishes from the team the last few years, the Cougars are looking to break into an elite grouping in the RMAC.Â
"Our program goal is to be a perennial top 5 program. It's a tough task with so many good teams in the RMAC and we are excited to do the work," said Blanken.Â
As happens each year, the coaches place a specific area they wish to see their team grow in. This years' emphasis deals with accountability from each player working to improve.Â
"Areas of emphasis this year are still developing but one of our main keys is a classic: self discipline," said Blanken. "We know we will only get as far as our collective effort gets us in this category. The girls have been making some strides in their attention to this one."
With a strong group of All-Conference players back this season, they will look to maintain that high level of play and push their team to new heights. Libby Goodman, Lilly Woods, Renee Phillips and Izzy Jones are players expected to produce results on the court.Â
"Our all conference kids are returning so I expect them to do some damage. Libby will continue to bring some firepower along with Lilly and Renee. Izzy is gonna turn another corner this year as well and I'm sure she will enjoy having those girls as options," said Blanken. "Spring was a great time for improvement for returners. Newcomers are off to a good start! Lots to look forward to!"
With optimism high heading into the season, Blanken will look to keep growing the standard of the program in his seventh season at the helm.Â
"We are going to take steps in the excellence of the product we put on the court. Our girls are going to go to work this year and are putting in the hours behind the closed doors. I really enjoy this group already!" Blanken said.
The Cougars will begin their season at the Oredigger Classic hosted by RMAC foe Colorado School of Mines on September 1 against San Francisco State University. The home opener for the Cougars is set for September 22nd against Fort Lewis.
