GRAND JUNCTION, CO- Colorado christian headed to the western part of the state as they took on Colorado Mesa in a non-conference match on Sunday. After a scoreless first half, the Mavericks broke through for a pair of goals in the second half to take down the Cougars 2-0.
The first half was defensive from the jump, and Michel Pinoncely made a save in the 8th minute to keep things scoreless. Zane Jacobson forced a save in the 34th as he got off a shot on goal, but neither team had a lot of threats in the first period. The two RMAC foes went to the break tied at 0-0 as they looked to push through in the second half.
Colorado Mesa immediately upped their offensive pressure to start the half, and it paid off in the 60th minute as they just snuck the ball by Pinoncely for the first goal of the game. Soon after, Gabe Roloff got off a shot to the bottom left part of the goal, but the Mavericks keeper made the save. After a flurry of CMU substitutions, new sub Fernando Morales stepped up and delivered goal from the spot on a penalty kick after a Cougars foul to make it 2-0. Drew Brown got off one final shot for CCU, but in the end they fell by a final score of 2-0.
The Cougars put a pair of shots on goal and Pinoncely tallied two more saves on his season.
Colorado Christian will open up RMAC play at Adams State on September 29 at 3 p.m. MST.
