ALAMOSA, CO- The COugars began Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Friday as they traveled to take on Adams State. A pair of first half goals led the way as CCU cruised to a 1-0 conference start with a convincing 3-1 victory.
The two teams began the match with very few shots as play was mainly in the midfield area. However, in the 16th minute Lucca Casci stole a ball in a dangerous spot and sprinted towards the goal. Casci then slipped a pass to his right to an open Dumisani Luthayi and he slotted the ball home beautifully for the early lead. The Cougars wasted little time in striking again, as a ball was crossed in front of the goal to the streaking Daniel Garciacano. Rather than taking the shot from a tough angle, Garciacano passed perfectly to Devin Najarro who blasted the shot home for the 2-0 lead. Caleb Dodge nearly broke through for a third, but his shot went off the right post and ricocheted out. Keeper Michel Pinoncely only needed to make two saves in the half as the game went to the break with a 2-0 CCU advantage.
Colorado Christian wasted no time in stretching their lead to three in the second half, as Najarro slotted home his second goal of the game from the left side with a run and shot that slipped in from a tight angle on the left side of the net. The excellent start put the Cougars in cruise control as they held the commanding lead. The Grizzlies were able to score a goal in the 77th minute, but it was not enough as CCU rolled their way to a 3-0 victory.
Najarro scored his second and third goal of his collegiate career as he had a tremendous day. Pinoncely notched three saves, while CCU took 13 shots with four being on goal.
The Cougars will play again on October 1 as they head to Fort Lewis with kickoff slated for 12 p.m. MST.
