LAKEWOOD, CO- With a slight breeze blowing at Trailblazer Stadium on Sunday afternoon, it was a perfect setting for the Colorado Christian RMAC home opener against Regis. After an absolute wonderstrike from Jessie Sims in the first half, the Rangers rallied late in the second half for a pair of goals to edge the Cougars 2-1.
Regis came out strong to begin the game, firing off an early shot on goal that was saved by Alana Lopp a little over a minute in. The Rangers continued the pressure from there with a trio of shots, but Lopp made another strong save and the match remained scoreless. The Cougars had not put a shot on goal yet as the 36th minute hit, but that all changed. Jessica Sims took a pass from Parker Sweet well outside the box, and fired a shot with her left foot. The ball went over the leaping arms of the Regis keeper and bounced down off the top bar and into the goal as the stadium went wild in awe and shock. It marked the team high third goal of the season for Sims as she scored an absolute strike that shocked the Rangers and gave her team a 1-0 lead. Capri Dewing nearly made it 2-0, but a Rangers save late in the half sent the two teams to the break with CCU leading 1-0.
Colorado Christian knew they were going to get Regis' all in the second half, and that proved to be true. The Cougars did a good job of repelling the Rangers attack for a large portion of the half, and with 14 minutes left they still held the 1-0 advantage. Then, a ball was played into the box and was deflected around before a Ranger attacker was able to get off an open look to equalize. Regis continued to push as they hit the top woodwork on three different shots, and they took a late lead in the 85th minute after Lopp made an incredible save. The senior keeper hit the ball off the top bar, but a Rangers striker was there to head the ball in for the game-winner. Dewing got off a last gasp effort, but in the end the Cougars fell in a tough battle with Regis 2-1.
Sims' goal was her third of the season, and the incredible nature of the strike sent the bench and crowd into a frenzy. Lopp was stellar all day, garnering six saves in the game. The offense fired off eight shots total as they pushed a strong Rangers team to the very end.
The Cougars will look to bounce back as they host UCCS on September 28 with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. MST
