ALAMOSA, CO- The Cougars headed south to take on Adams State in a big RMAC matchup on Friday night. In a tight game throughout, Schafer Reichart provided the late heroics with a layup with seven seconds that turned out to be the game winner in a crucial 82-81 victory.
Noah Kon got the scoring started with a quick layup, while Bradley Land followed with a layup of his own. Kon then proceeded to hit consecutive jumpers to push his team ahead by one, and a three-pointer from Jacob Everson later made the lead two. The teams went back and forth, but a mini-run from ASU put them ahead five midway through the half.
An eight-point burst from the Grizzlies put them ahead 13 quickly, but a three from Michael Bell Jr. cut the deficit to nine. Shaylen Woodnerry then knocked down a three to bring his team even closer, and yet another three this time from Reichart made things tight. The two teams battled to the half with the hosts leading 47-39.
Land came out of the half strong with a jumper as the Cougars stayed connected and close to the Grizzlies. Brenden Patrick hit a jumper to cut the lead to just three for the Grizzlies, but the hosts went into the final 10 minutes with a six point lead.
The lead grew to as large as nine with 5:48 to play, but the COugars refused to go down. A big Everson three brought CCU back to within four, and Reichart hit a clutch layup with 1:24 to keep his team within four. The define put the clamps on ASU and would not allow them to score in the final minute of play. A massive three-point play from Land brought the COugars to within one as one more stop and basket was needed. That is exactly what they got, as an ASU turnover set the scene for the perfect play. A give and go from Reichart to Zeil saw Schafer cut from the perimeter and take the pass from Nic to score a layup to put CCU ahead by one with seven seconds remaining. The final shot from the Grizzlies was no good as Colorado Christian celebrated the incredible comeback victory 82-81.
The offense was incredibly balanced on the night, led by Kon with 15 points and Reichart and Everson with 14 each. Land joined them in double digit points with 11, while Kon and Zeil each pulled down 5 rebounds apiece.
Colorado Christian will look to continue their winning ways as they head to Fort Lewis on January 20 with tipoff slated for 6 p.m. MST.
