CCU Downed by Mavericks in Conference Battle

LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian returned for a short home slate on Friday morning at Trailblazer Stadium to take on Colorado Mesa University. After a scoreless first half, two goals in 38 seconds helped the Mavericks prevail as they put up a strong performance and defeated the Cougars 2-0.

The Cougars started the match with a long ball played to Ava Dinverno on the wing getting a shot off but just missing the target. Mesa would get a few early set piece opportunities but would miss their target on goal and be cleared away. Another counter attack for the Mavericks would give Alana Lopp her first save of the match, denying a goal scoring chance. Colorado Mesa gave the Cougars a hard fight in the first half, holding on to the ball for the majority of the first half. More chances for both teams would miss, as the end of the half would come with both teams tied 0-0.

The visitors got the second half going with a shot but Lopp was on her feet and ready to force the save. Senior Jessie Sims would get a great chance at the other side of the field, but would just miss the near post giving CCU some momentum. Mesa would charge down for a break, and a foul occurred giving Mesa a penalty kick. Lopp dove the correct way, but the power on the kick would give Mesa the 1-0 lead. However, it would only take the Mavericks 38 seconds to get another goal off a rebound and increase their lead 2-0. CCU would get more substitutions on the field to get more fresh legs in the game, as a chance for Ella Salsbery would be saved. Mesa would keep the pressure on the Cougars for the remainder of the game, as the final whistle blew with Colorado Mesa defeating the Cougars 2-0.

Colorado Christian will return to Trailblazer Stadium on October 13 as they take on Westminster University (Utah) at 1:00 p.m. MST.
