LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars continued play at home with a Sunday afternoon matchup against Westminster University. After the Griffins took a lead in the first half, CCU responded early in the second period as the game resulted in a 1-1 draw.
The offensive pressure from Westminster started immediately as they spent a majority of the first half with possession of the ball. A pair of shots resulted in a save from
Alana Lopp and a shot that missed just wide.
Capri Dewing took a rip from outside the box that nearly went in, but the Griffins keeper managed to deflect it away for the save. In the 33rd, the visitors went on a break and managed to slot home a goal to break the scoreless tie. One last shot from
Ashleigh Willette went high as the teams went to the break with WU leading 1-0.
A rejuvenated Cougars squad came out in the second half as they began to put a lot of pressure on the Griffins defense. CCU earned a corner less than two minutes into the half, and
Ava Dinverno looped a ball beautifully into the box where a myriad of attackers awaited.
Hannah Mares was the one who got her foot on the ball and tucked it into the goal for the quick equalizer in the second half. The two teams battled for an opportunity from there, but the defenses stepped up and did not allow a ton of looks. Mares forced a save in the 83rd with a shot on goal, and one final attempt in the final seconds from Westminster slipped just left as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Cougars will go to nearby Golden for a matchup against nationally ranked #1 Colorado School of Mines on October 18 at 6 p.m. MST.
