GRAND JUNCTION, CO- Colorado Christian headed to the western part of the state to take on Colorado Mesa University in conference play on Friday. The Cougars battled hard, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks claimed the victory 4-0.
The hosts started off on the front foot in the match, with an opportunity on the goal line that forced
Jailon Gillespie to make a great save. CCU sophomore
Tiago Gomes found the ball at his feet and took a shot on the ground that would be held by the CMU keeper. The Mavericks would keep attacking, as a cross was sent in to give the hosts the 1-0 lead. The Cougars showed a great amount of fight despite conceding the first goal, with a pair of shots from
Arthur Santana and
Drew Brown. As halftime quickly approached, the Mavericks took another chance at goal from a corner kick and their lead improved to 2-0 heading into halftime.Â
CCU would try to get one goal back with a corner kick and
Mac Weaver heading the ball towards goal, but the keeper made the diving save. CMU would go on a counter attack, and find an open player in the middle of the 18 yard box to extend their lead 3-0. The Cougars would keep rotating with multiple substitutions, as well as keep attacking with two corner kicks that would be cleared away. Another corner for the Mavericks would be delivered to the back post to an open player to head the ball and take the 4-0 lead. Time winded down, as the ref blew the final whistle with the Mavericks taking the 4-0 win over the Cougars.Â
Colorado Christian will stay on the road and head to Salt Lake City to take on Westminster University (Utah) on October 20 at 2:30 p.m. MST.
