SALT LAKE CITY, UT- The Cougars continued their roadtrip on Sunday with a matchup at Westminster University in Utah. After the Griffins struck early, CCU responded with a goal in the second half to earn a 1-1 draw.
The hosts began the game well, attacking with a purpose and netting a goal in the 11th minute. They would go on to have a trio of corner kicks, but they would be cleared away by the Cougars defense.
Tiago Gomes had a shot that went wide, and
Arthur Santana forced a save with a shot on goal. The Griffins had a late attempt sail high as the half arrived with WU leading 1-0.
Jailon Gillespie made an early save, and Colorado Christian moved quickly in transition from there.
Daniel Garciacano lobbed a beautiful ball over the defense to the right side of the 18-yard box to a waiting Gomes. Tiago took a great touch to bring the ball down and slotted it home from a difficult angle for the stunning equalizer. Moments later, a hard challenge from
Findlay Coleman saw the freshman sent off with a red card as CCU was forced to play a man down. The Griffins walked away from the play with a pair of yellows as the competition intensified. Westminsted forced another Gillespie save moments later, and Santana put another strike on goal that was stopped.
Adrian Diez posted a shot on goal that was saved as well, and a few late attempts from the Griffins did not connect as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Cougars will have an entire week off to prepare for a road matchup in Rapid City at South Dakota Mines on October 27 at 1 p.m. MST.
