RAPID CITY, S.D.- Colorado Christian hit the road for the final time this season for a matchup against the Hardrockers from South Dakota Mines on Sunday. The Cougars put up a fantastic performance to help them secure the 1-0 win.
Tiago Gomes got things going for CCU with a shot attempt on the edge of the box, but the wind picked up the ball and it would go just wide of the goal. Both teams would get corner opportunities and both defenses stood tall and cleared away any chance of a goal. In the 30th minute, CCU would get a throw-in to find
Arthur Santana sending a great pass in the air to Gomes, who flicked the ball in the air to find
Gabe Roloff who chipped the ball over the goalie and put the ball in the net to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead. The hosts played hard and kept the pressure on CCU, getting chance after chance, but the Cougars played even better on defense. Minutes before halftime,
Lucca Casci would take a shot, but the keeper made the save as that would be the last real attempt in the half with CCU leading 1-0.
The second half started with a CCU corner kick, but a foul was committed to give the hosts the ball. The Hardrockers would move the ball up the field and take a shot, as
Jailon Gillespie made the save to keep the clean sheet. Santana would take a volley shot off a header pass, as the opposing keeper made the save. Both teams kept making substitutions to keep fresh legs on the field to keep battling.
Adrian Diez would take a crack at goal, but just placed the ball far right of goal. SDSM had a corner kick in the closing minutes of the match, finding an open player on the back post, but the pass was misread and missed the ball and any chance to equalize. The ref then blew the final whistle as the Cougars came away victorious 1-0.
Gabe Roloff scored his second goal of the season, marking his 14th career goal at CCU.
Colorado Christian will return to Trailblazer Stadium on October 31 for a matchup against rivals Colorado School of Mines at 3 p.m. MST.
