CCU Honor Joel Zamora on Live Like Joel Day with Huge Conference Win

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars returned to Trailblazer Stadium on Sunday to continue RMAC play against the Grizzlies from Adams State University. After trailing in the first half, two goals in the second half helped the Cougars earn their first conference win 2-1.

The match started with a quick chance for CCU with Tiago Gomes getting a header just wide of the goal. It only took Adams State eight minutes to create their first chance to score on a header to take the early 1-0 lead. It was a very physical and high tension game with both teams committing early fouls. Cole Foresman came up the field for a set piece and took a chance, but the keeper was set to make the save. As time went on, the Cougars started taking more shots and attempts but nothing could find their way towards goal, and halftime quickly arrived with the Grizzlies leading 1-0.

CCU definitely came out in the second half with a heavy attacking mindset, giving Gabe Roloff an attempt that would go just wide of the far post. The Grizzlies would get a corner kick played short, but it was miss kicked and controlled by Adrian Diez to regain possession. Diez would have a ball sent to him on the wing as he played it to Gomes who got a shot off that was saved, but the loose rebound was found by Arthur Santana who tapped the ball in the net to level the game 1-1. CCU would not let that be the only chance to score, as another strike from Santana looked to be headed in, but a great diving save from the opposing keeper kept it out. The Cougars kept attacking, and in the 87th minute, Roloff was brought down in the penalty box and the ref stopped the play to give CCU a penalty kick. It was senior Lucca Casci who approached the penalty spot to take the kick for the Cougars, and he smashed it to the left side of the goal to give CCU the 2-1 lead with three minutes left. It wasn't enough for Adams State as the Cougars held on and the ref blew the final whistle to give CCU the win 2-1, honoring Joel Zamora on "Live Like Joel Day".

CCU was electric with their offense as they put up 24 shots overall in the game. The win would extends the Cougars unbeaten run against Adams State to 12 straight games.

Colorado Christian will now head to Colorado Springs for a matchup against top five ranked UCCS on October 10 at 7:00 p.m. MST.
