CCU Downed by Crosstown Rivals MSU Denver

LAKEWOOD, CO - Colorado Christian continued their home slate of games as crosstown rivals MSU Denver made the trip to Trailblazer Stadium on a chilly Sunday afternoon. The Cougars battled hard throughout the match, but in the end it wasn't enough as the Roadrunners scored two goals to secure the win 2-0.

The match started off just 22 seconds in with the Cougars winning a corner kick, Gabe Roloff made a great connection with the ball but the keeper made the fingertip save. Five minutes would pass as CCU would win another corner kick, as Roloff controlled it and made the pass to Tiago Gomes who attempted a volley that was heading towards goal, but the crossbar denied Gomes a wonder strike. The Cougars controlled the majority of the game in the first half, getting 10 shots in total and three of them on goal. MSU Denver finally got some time on the ball and a few shot attempts, as they would miss wide. One chance came for the Roadrunners, but Jailon Gillespie was ready to make the save. The first half then came to an end, with both teams tied 0-0.

It would be the visitors who would be on the front foot to start the second half, as Gillespie forced another save just seconds into the new half. As the Roadrunners continued the pressure, they found the loose ball in the middle of the box after a save attempt and struck the ball in the back of the net to take the 1-0 lead. CCU would keep their offensive mindset going as an attempt from Mac Weaver was saved, but would keep the Cougars momentum going. Things would get chippy between the two teams in this rival matchup, with fouls committed by both teams. Then in the 73rd minute, a long ball over the head of the CCU backline would find the feet for MSU Denver and a shot on the ground would end up in the back of the goal to give the visitors the 2-0 advantage. As time went on both teams kept getting more physical and less chances on goal would come, as the game came to an end with MSU Denver overcoming the Cougars 2-0.

Colorado Christian will close out their season against Regis University on November 6 at 7 p.m. MST at home under the lights.
