LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian took on New Mexico Highlands on Saturday night in a non-conference contest at the CCU Event Center. The Cowboys started strong, and a strong comeback bid from CCU fell barely short in a 65-58 setback.
Shaylen Woodberry started hot right away as he drained an early three-pointer and got a layup to go as he scored his teams; first 6 points.
Tate Odvody made a layup as CCU trailed 14-9 midway through the half.
NMHU began to pull ahead as they started hitting shots to take a 16 point advantage. Odvody made a layup to cut into the lead, and
Garrett Poelman closed the half with a jumper as the Cowboys held a 41-22 lead at the break.
A
Jacob Everson three-pointer sparked a run from the Cougars as they began to claw their way back into the game.
Schafer Reichart hit a pair of layups with a
Tanner Hecht layup in between as they began to stack defensive stops as well. A pair of Odvody free throws and an Everson three brought the gap to just 11 at 53-42.
Reichart got a pair of contested layups to go through contact as he made the deficit just six points with 5:30 to play. Unfortunately, that was as close as the rally would get the Cougars as NMHU hit their shots down the stretch to claim a narrow 65-58 victory.
Woodberry paced the offense with 14 points, and Everson poured in 12. Reichart and Odvody chipped in 10 points apiece, while Schafer and
Promise Idiaru snagged 8 rebounds respectively. Poelman led the facilitating with 3 assists on the night.
The Cougars will look to bounce back on December 21 as they host Bethany College (Kan.) at 3 p.m. MST.
