CLAREMORE, OK- The Cougars wrapped their four-game set at Rogers State on Saturday with a doubleheader. After narrowly dropping game one, the bats came alive in a big way as CCU routed the Hillcats 10-3 in the second contest of the day.
GAME ONE
The first contest of the day featured a pitching duel as Brady Ritzmann faced off against the Hillcats' Christoper Spry. Ritzmann gave his team an opportunity to take the lead in the fifth by going five innings with no runs allowed. Caden Walton notched an RBI groundout to score Dorian Pacheco. From there, however, the offense was stymied. Rogers State tacked on a trio of runs in the sixth to take control, and the game held pat from there as CCU barely fell 3-1.
Ritzmann was stellar, allowing a mere two hits with no runs allowed.
GAME TWO
The offense came to life in game two, but they found themselves down early 1-0 in the first. The Cougars responded, starting with a two RBI single from Aaron Morgan. Walton picked up an RBI with a single, and Cole Douglass got an RBI by wearing a pitch with the bases loaded. Major Maydon then walked with the bases loaded as CCU went up 5-1 after two innings.
They tacked on yet another run as Morgan reached on fielder's choice and Pacheco came home to score. The Hillcats scored a pair in the fourth, but never came close. William Brassil ripped a solo shot in the sixth to extend the lead, and Gavin Acosta smacked a two-run double as the Cougars led 9-3. CCU brought one more run across in the eighth as Kade Carney singled home Pacheco to put the finishing touches on a 10-3 victory.
Jaxon Simmons got the victory as he went five innings with no runs allowed on just two hits. Morgan led the offense with three RBI, while Acosta followed with two.
With their first win in hand, the Cougars now head to Georgia Southwestern State University for a three-game set February 16-18. First pitch on the 16th is set for 4 p.m. MST in Americus, GA.
