AMERICUS, GA- The Cougars traveled south on Friday as they began their three-game set with Georgia Southwestern State University to start the weekend. Despite some stellar pitching, the offense could not quite find the runs needed in a 4-0 defeat to the Canes.
It was a pitcher's duel early as Jake Gimbel got the start facing off against the Canes' Nick McCollum. The first two innings remained scoreless, but a leadoff homer and RBI groundout got the home team on the board 2-0. Gimbel continued to be effective, only allowing one more run in the fifth. The offense, however, was stymied by McCollum, not finding a way to get runs across on him.
Heading into the later innings, GSWSU held a 4-0 lead. The Cougars had one last attempt to try to extend the game in the ninth, and they began to threaten with a single from William Brassil. Major Maydon and Jonny Tewinkle then drew walks to load the bases with one out. Unfortunately a strikeout and groundout ensued to end the threat and the game with a final score of 4-0.
Gimbel was strong in his start, going six innings with just three runs allowed and seven strikeouts. Jaxon Simmons was quality in relief, only giving up two hits in two innings of work.
Colorado Christian will continue their series with the Canes on February 17 with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. MST.
