CCU Continue RMAC Play in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, CO- CCU headed to west Colorado for their series with Colorado Mesa beginning with a doubleheader on Friday. The Cougars battled and led at points throughout the day, but ultimately fell by scores of 17-7 and 17-3.

GAME ONE
The offense got going early in the first contest, starting with an RBI groundout from Luke Thompson to plate Kade Carney. The Mavericks scored a run the next inning, but a big pair of frames was in store for the Cougars.

Caden Walton began the scoring with a solo homer to left field that got the momentum swinging towards CCU again in the second. After a scoreless second inning for CMU, Carney walked, stole second and advanced to third on a balk. Jonny Tewinkle drew a walk, and Major Maydon singled to score Carney. Then, Aaron Morgan broke things open with a huge three-run home run to right center to make it 6-1 Cougars.

The Mavericks rallied for seven runs the next inning, and continued to build their lead to 13-6 by the eighth. Ross Panlasigui doubled in a run in the eighth, but the hosts held on for the win by a final score of 17-7.

Morgan paced the offense as he sent a ball over the wall for a three-run shot. Carney continued to be effective, going 1-2 at the plate and drawing three walks with a pair of runs scored.

GAME TWO
In the second contest, the Mavericks jumped ahead to an early lead and never looked back. Thompson notched an RBI single in the fifth, and Tucker Willingham tallied an RBI of his own in the sixth. Cole Douglass plated the final run of the game in the sixth with a sac fly, but the home team was too much in an eventual 17-3 defeat for CCU.

The Cougars close their four-game set with the Mavericks on March 23 with game times set for 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. MST.
