Cougars Close Series at Colorado Mesa with Saturday Doubleheader

GRAND JUNCTION, CO- Colorado Christian closed their series at Colorado Mesa on Saturday with a doubleheader. The games were a battle throughout, but in the end CCU dropped the pair by scores of 20-7 and 9-1.

GAME ONE
The offense got going immediately in the first contest as Aaron Morgan singled home Kade Carney for a 1-0 lead. Luke Thompson was able to make it home on a wild pitch as the visitors jumped ahead 2-0 early. The Mavericks plated a run in the second, but a big third inning was in store for CCU.

Major Maydon started the scoring with a bunt single that was perfectly placed to score Caden Walton. Tucker Willingham then singled home a run before Jonny Tewinkle drew a bases loaded walk. Carney singled through the left side for a 6-1 advantage as the offense was on a roll early.

CMU began to chip away at the lead, and they tied the game in the fourth at 6-6. Gavin Acosta followed immediately with a solo shot to left field, but then the Mavericks began to rally. The home team used the long ball to get going, exploding in the sixth to pull away and eventually claim a 20-7 victory.

The offense was extremely balanced, as six different hitters notched an RBI in the game.

GAME TWO
Acosta continued to see the ball well in the second contest, putting his team in the lead with an RBI single in the second. From there, the pitching was able to lock down the Cougars and the hosts began to get their offense going.

The long ball contributed to five runs in consecutive innings, and three doubles sent them ahead 9-1, the eventual final score in the series' final game.

Colorado Christian will return home for a conference series against UCCS at All Star Park, with first pitch on March 28 set for 2 p.m. MST.
