Colorado Christian Open Series with Crosstown Rivals at Home

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars finally opened up their series with MSU Denver at home on Sunday after two days of postponement due to weather. The Roadrunners took game one 18-2 before an instant classic in game two that came down to the wire in an 11-10 victory for the visitors.

GAME ONE
The Roadrunners scored a pair of runs in the first, but the Cougars responded with a run on an error in the first. From there, the visitors offense got going for 16 runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 18-1 lead. William Brassil ripped a solo homer to right center to bring back a run, but in the end MSU Denver came out on top 18-2 in a seven inning game.

Jack Cazin was strong in relief, going three innings with no runs allowed and just one hit given up. Brassil hit the first homer of the series for his team to pace the offense.

GAME TWO
Game two started fast and turned into a thrilling battle by the end. The Cougars got their bats going in the first, scoring a run on a Caden Walton single, and Sawyer Shepherd came up big with a two-run single moments later for a 3-0 lead. The Roadrunners scored five runs over the next two innings to grab the lead, but CCU responded right back.

Major Maydon brought his team within one in the fourth with an RBI single, and Walton tied things up with a single of his own. Brassil continued a strong day as he roped a two-run double to give the Cougars the lead back at 7-5. A homer from MSUD tied the game and the teams headed into the final frame level at 7-7.

The Roadrunners rallied for four runs in their half of the seventh, putting the pressure on CCU to mount a comeback. Aaron Morgan walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a groundout. After Kade Carney reached on an error, Luke Thompson gave his team a jolt with a three-run bomb to right center to bring the game within 11-10. Unfortunately, the home team could not get any more offense going as they fell in a heartbreaker 11-10.

Jake Gimbel got the start, going six innings with four strikeouts. Thompson paced the offense with three RBI, and Walton, Shepherd and Brassil knocked in a pair of runs.

The Cougars will close their series against the Roadrunners with a doubleheader on April 22 at 12 and 3 p.m. MST from All Star Park.
