WICHITA, KS- The Cougars closed their roadtrip on Saturday with a matchup in Kansas at Newman University. An early Jets goal was equalized in the second half, but the hosts responded with a goal to claim the 2-1 victory.
The game started fast for Newman as they managed to put one into the back of the net a little over a minute into the game. Keeper
Jai Gillespie made a save a bit later, but the other shots in the half for Newman did not go on goal. The offense for CCU could not find their rhythm in the half as they did not manage to get any shots off to threaten the Jets.
The offense found more life in the second half, pressuring with more intentionality as
Lucca Casci,
Lucas Peruzo and
Gabe Roloff all got shots on goal. A red card was issued to a Newman player in the 64th minute, giving CCU the one man advantage. They capitalized five minutes later as
Adrian Diez put a perfect pass to Casci who slotted it home for the equalizer. However, a little over four minutes later the Jets managed to retake the lead and they held on from there despite shots on goal from Peruzo and Roloff as the hosts gave CCU their first loss of the season 2-1.
The Cougars got off nine shots in the second half to intensify the pressure, and Casci recorded his second goal of the season to lead the offense.
Colorado Christian now returns home to Trailblazer Stadium for a matchup with Western Oregon on September 20 at 10 a.m. MST.
