Colorado Christian Battle Simon Fraser in Home Opener

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars hosted the only NCAA team in Canada on Sunday as they took on Simon Fraser (B.C.) at Trailblazer Stadium. After the Red Leafs tallied two first half goals, CCU responded late in the half to trim the deficit but it was not enough in an eventual 2-1 defeat.

The offense pressured early and to a quick opportunity as the Cougars earned a penalty a little over three minutes into the game. Hannah Mares stepped up to take it from the spot, but the Red Leafs keeper made a great stop diving to her right to deny CCU the early advantage. Simon Fraser began to get a few shots off, forcing keeper Alana Lopp to make a few saves. The Red Leafs broke through in the 27th as they headed home a corner for the advantage. A few minutes later they tacked on another goal on a well placed corner to claim the 2-0 lead. A few minutes before half, the Cougars responded as they earned another penalty that was buried for the first collegiate goal from freshman Ava Schock. The teams went to the break with the visitors on top 2-1.

Noelle Mingo almost leveled the score in the 62nd minute as she ripped a ball from outside the box that went off the top post. Lopp made an incredible save in the 79th to keep her team in it, and in the 84th a second yellow sent a player off for the Red Leafs. CCU pressed for the equalizer but could not break through as the game ended with a final score of 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

The Cougars continue play at home on September 20 as they host CSU Dominguez Hills at 12:30 p.m. MST.
