BETHANY, OK- The Cougars closed their season opening roadtrip with a matchup at Southwestern Christian University in Oklahoma on Sunday. It was a clinical offensive performance, as the team scored early and often en route to keeping a clean sheet with a 4-0 victory.
The hosts came out firing, putting two shots on goal to force saves from keeper
Alana Lopp.
Ava Schock got off the first shot of the game for her team, but it was saved. With a little less than 14 minutes to go in the half, a beautiful passing combo between
Justine Moreau and
Capri Dewing set up the grad transfer
Hannah Mares for her first goal as a Cougars as the visitors jumped ahead. CCU wasted little time scoring again, as Moreau notched a goal of her own a little over a minute later off a Mares assist as the two combined beautifully to go ahead 2-0. The score stayed at 2-0 as the teams headed to halftime.
It was not very far into the second half before the offense produced another goal, this time from
Cora Lopp as she put home a ball from
Lexi Taitague for a 3-0 lead. Taitague assisted on a goal, and moments later she scored one of her own as the Cougars spread the ball around clinically. Jessie Sime picked up the assists as the dominant performance led to a 4-0 advantage. The team continued to play excellent defense from there as the backline was strong to keep the clean sheet in the eventual 4-0 victory.
In his second game as head coach of the Cougars, Caleb Cole picked up his first win in convincing fashion to start the season off strong.
With momentum from the dominant victory, CCU will now return home for a matchup at Trailblazer Stadium with Canadian University Simon Fraser on September 15 at 1 p.m. MST.
