LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars continued their homestand on Friday morning as they took on nearby rivals and #11 nationally ranked Colorado School of Mines at Trailblazer Stadium. The two teams battled evenly throughout much of the contest, but a goal late in the first half from the Orediggers proved the difference in the 1-0 setback.
Mines pressured early, with their leading goal scorer Bella Campos firing off a pair of shots in the first five minutes of play.
Ava Dinverno took a chance that was blocked, and goalkeeper
Mia Mares made a pair of tremendous saves to keep things level. Mares continued to stand tall as she denied the Orediggers again, and a shot from
Sophia Tagge sailed high on a strong shot. With under three minutes to play in the first half, the Orediggers struck on a shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection and found the back of the net as Mines took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Tagge had another go early in the second half, but both defenses remained steady and did not let a lot of good looks occur. The best look for the Cougars came on a long cross from Taylor Tobolksi to the back post, where
Faith Gaudy was waiting with a header that narrowly missed wide left. Try as they may, CCU could not connect as they fell 1-0 to a talented Mines squad.
Colorado Christian will close their four game homestand on October 12 at 11 a.m. MDT as they face off against CSU Pueblo at Trailblazer Stadium.
