SPEARFISH, SD- The Cougars headed north to take on Black Hills State in Spearfish on Friday evening. An early goal from CCU held up until the final three minutes when BHSU equalized as the two teams drew 1-1.
It did not take long for the Cougars to strike, as a beautiful long ball over the top from
Breenalyn Shimabukuro was collected by a streaking
Ava Dinverno. The senior raced forward with the ball at her feet beautifully, and she lashed a hard driven ball towards the top of the goal as it found the back netting for an early 1-0 lead. CCU continued to pressure as
Noelle Mingo had a pair of shots saved and
Faith Gaudy also had a look on goal denied.
Sophia Tagge forced a save before keeper
Issy Taussig came up with three late saves in the half to keep her team ahead. Taylor Tobolksi had the last look on goal of the half, but it was saved as the Cougars led 1-0 at halftime.
The Yellowjackets had a shot go off the top woodwork in the 55th minute as they searched for an equalizer, and moments later Taussig made another save.
Alexis Byrd forced a save before Taussig made another stop to keep her team ahead. The teams battled until the 86th minute, when a BHSU free kick was blasted at the goal and ricocheted off the top frame and into the goal to tie the game 1-1 in shocking fashion.
Gabbie Henkle had a late shot on goal, but the Yellowjackets keeper saved it as the teams closed the match with a 1-1 tie.
BHSU held a slight 14-13 edge in shots, but CCU had 9 on goal to the hosts 6. Taussig made 5 saves, while the Cougars took five corners.
