Cougars Battle to Gritty Victory at New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, NM- CCU headed south to take on New Mexico Highlands on Thursday night. Led by a balanced offensive attack and good defense throughout, the Cougars earned themselves an important 67-61 victory on the road.

Jacob Everson got things started with an early three-pointer, while CJ Barnes scored four straight with a tipin and jumper for a 7-3 lead. Shaylen Woodberry gave his team a spark with a rare four-point play after nailing a three-pointer and getting fouled for a 13-8 lead. Promise Idiaru joined the onslaught from beyond the arc with a three of his own as CCU led 18-13 midway through the half.

Bobby McWard drained a three-pointer while Idiaru scored consecutive buckets for a 25-18 lead. Tate Odvody connected on a jumper off a steal, and a three-pointer from Bradley Land stretched the lead to 33-20 at the half.

A quick layup out of the break from Odvody saw the lead grow to 15, and McWard kept the lead there with another three-pointer. NMHU began to gain some momentum from there as they cut the lead down to 5, but Idiaru and Woodberry put in layups for a 48-39 lead with 9 minutes to play.

Consecutive three-pointers from the Cowboys made things close, but CCU once again rose to the challenge with a three-point play from Land and an Everson jumper. More hot shooting from beyond the arc from the hosts eventually tied things at 59-59 with 1:26 left. An Everson jumper followed by a Cowboys turnover set up Woodberry for a massive three-point look that he calmly drained for a five point advantage. NMHU was forced to foul down the stretch, and CCU made their free throws to salt away an important 67-61 victory.

Everson paced the Cougars offense with 14 points, followed by 13 from Woodberry, 12 from Idiaru and 10 from Land.

Colorado Christian close their roadtrip on February 22 at Fort Lewis with tipoff slated for 3 p.m. MST.
