LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars were home for the second straight matchup on Saturday as they took on crosstown rival Regis at the CCU Event Center. The Rangers gave the hosts all they could handle, but in the end it was a dominant fifth set victory as Colorado Christian hung on to win 3-2.
The first started even for a bit, but a run midway through put the Cougars in control. An ace from
Connelly Kilgore and kills from
Janelle Deboer and
Suzanna Conner saw the lead stretch to 13-7. A block from
Renee Phillips and
Krista Traynor later made it 17-12, and the Cougars rolled to a 25-21 set win off a Phillips ace.
Set two was tight throughout as the two teams battled back and forth. A
Sierra Crist kill saw CCU take a 15-12 lead, but the Rangers rallied back to go ahead 18-16. Phillips took over with a kill and solo block, and the score eventually stood at 23-23. Kilgore made sure her team did not lose the set, putting down a kill and then serving up an ace on set point to seal the 25-23 win.
The Rangers buckled down in set three, racing to a 16-11 lead. Consecutive Kilgore kills tightened things, and eventually the Cougars got to within 21-19 late. A four-point Regis run sealed the set for the visitors as they took it 25-19.
Regis again started strong, streaking to an 11-7 advantage, and they did not trail the rest of the set. A Conner and Deboer block saw CCU come within one at 19-1, but the Rangers closed well scoring the final three points of the set to force a decisive fifth with a 25-20 win.
Traynor notched back-to-back kills to start the fifth off right for her team, and a four point run keyed by consecutive blocks had CCU in control. Eventually leading 8-5, the Cougars went on a massive run to all but seal the victory. Conner slammed home a kill, and she and Phillips combined for a block to make it 10-5. That was when
Kristina House took over from the service line. The senior libero went on an unfathomable streak, dialing up four straight aces to make it match point in a rare sequence of events. After Regis got the next point, Phillips closed things out with a kill for the convincing 15-6 set five victory for the win.
Conner had a big night, notching a team high 18 kills to go along with five blocks. Kilgore tallied 16 kills for her team with two aces. Running a 6-2 most of the night, Traynor had 25 assists, 20 digs and 13 kills for an impressive triple-double. Freshman
Danielle Seabern was strong with 21 assists. Deboer had five blocks, while House tallied 12 digs to go along with her team leading five aces.
With a 2-0 conference record and six straight wins, CCU will continue RMAC play on the road at Black Hills State on September 26 with first serve set for 6 p.m. MST from Spearfish, South Dakota.
