SALT LAKE CITY, UT- Colorado Christian headed to Utah on Thursday to take on Westminster University in a non-conference matchup at Dumke Field. A first half goal had the Griffins up early, and they tacked on a second early in the second half to hold off the Cougars 2-1 in the end.
Westminster got on the board early, scoring in the first three minutes of play to take a fast 1-0 advantage. The offense for CCu struggled to find their footing as
Tiago Gomes got off the only shot of the half that sailed wide right. The teams went to the break with the hosts on top 1-0.
The Griffins staved off a
Salvador Fernandes shot on goal, and moments later they struck for a 2-0 lead. In the 60th minute, Fernandes earned a penalty and converted it to draw his team within 2-1. The Cougars got off several more shots, but they could not manage to equalize as they fell 2-1 as the final whistle blew.
Colorado Christian will now return home for their final non-conference game against MSU Denver on September 28 at 7 p.m. MST at Trailblazer Stadium.
