Boulder, CO- The Cougars traveled to CU's indoor facility over the weekend with a full squad to open up the first indoor meet of the new year. The day saw 2 school records broken and several more RMAC Indoor qualifiers posted as the Cougars start to race with sights set on postseason.
In her first collegiate meet ever, former Senior CCU Volleyball player
Janelle DeBoer wasted no time making history, needing only one race to etch her name into the record books. DeBoer competed in the Long Jump, 60m, and 200m in her first meet in the Cougars singlet, jumping to a solid 6
th place in the Long Jump Friday afternoon. DeBoer would light it up on Saturday, racing the 60m, making it into finals and posting a 4
th place finish with the time of 7.95 seconds. This leaves DeBoer 18
th on the RMAC indoor list, with the third fastest indoor Women's 60 CCU has seen. The spotlight would continue to shine on her as she geared up for the 200m. A smooth start saw her in line with the pack 100 meters down the stretch, only to turn up the heat and calmly dust the rest of the sprinters, winning the heat by almost 2 seconds all while shattering the school record with a final time of 25.78 seconds. DeBoer's first ever 200 lands her 17
th on the RMAC Indoor list as she continues to explore just how fast she can run before RMAC Indoor Championships. With several indoor meets left, the Cougars eagerly await DeBoer to continue to shine with some experience under her belt.
Ella Brinkman, the true freshman from Spokane, WA would similarly find her name in the record book after this meet with an impressive Long Jump performance. Her first attempt being her best one, Brinkman would jump a superb 5.38m (17'8"), breaking the school record by just under 6 inches. Brinkman would also compete strongly in the Triple Jump with a jump of 11.08m (36'4.25"), landing her second in CCU's all time triple jump. This leaves Brinkman 21
st on the Long Jump Indoor RMAC list and 12
th in Triple Jump. Already proving to be one of the best we've seen, Brinkman continues to work towards the Indoor Championships to see what mark she can make in the conference.
Bella Fletcher would continue the excellent day for the sprinters, racing the 400m and finding herself in the record books as well. Fletcher would race a blazing 59.64, the second fastest indoor time CCU has seen. This leaves her 12
th on the RMAC list as the freshman will have her share of opportunity to make a mark for the Cougars this indoor season.
Sprints Coach Lyndsey Marshall reflected on the day saying, "I'm really excited about how our athletes are performing this early in the season. Despite being a young squad, they continue to improve each week, and its been great to see that hard work lead to school records. Janelle has been a great addition to our team as well, although new to the college track scene, she brings a veteran level of competitiveness as she transitions from Volleyball. I'm excited to see what this group can accomplish as the season continues."
The distance side was led by none other than
Rachel Harpt, racing a fantastic mile as she continues her journey to qualify for RMAC and dip below a 5 minute mile. The sophomore began the race comfortably in the middle of the pack, patiently waiting for the right moment to make her move. As the race began to spread out, Harpt continued to cruise in a good spot, kicking with 2 laps to go. Harpt would close her last 300m in an impressive 55 seconds to run 2
nd in her heat, 10
th overall in the mile race. Harpt's final mark was 5:15.7, converting to a 5:08 mile leaving her 20
th on the RMAC list, just two spots shy of the Indoor Championships. With her sights set on Washburn, Harpt returns to her home state looking to make a strong push toward RMAC Championship qualifications, further cementing her role as a key runner pushing the program forward.
Head Coach Evan Verbal when asked about the meet responded, "A lot of our women fought hard today, and I'm proud of how they competed. On the distance side,
Rachel Harpt was tactically excellent in the mile. All of her hard work is paying off. It was also cool to see most of our freshman get their feet wet in their first collegiate indoor track race!"
The Cougars will continue the indoor season in Topeka, Kansas travelling to Washburn next week to race advantageously on a banked track at sea level, with many eyes fixed on post-season meets. Â
