Colorado Springs, CO – The Cougars traveled to the nearby Mountain Lion Field House in the Springs, leaving with several different records and a national provisional.
Ella Brinkman, the freshman who already had left her mark in the CCU record books left her mark on the national stage this weekend. The true freshman jumped a national provisional in the Long Jump, needing only one jump to get things done. Having already annihilated the standing school record earlier in the year with a 17'8", Brinkman jumped 18'9.25, a PR by
over a foot. An incredible feat for the lone jumper, Brinkman now sits tied for 6
th on the RMAC Indoor list, only one of six RMAC athletes to jump a national provisional. As Brinkman continues to take massive strides, all eyes are on her to make something happen in the Indoor Championships. Brinkman wasn't done, competing in the Triple Jump, setting a PR by almost 10 inches, jumping 37'8.75". Still the second longest jump in program history, this leaves Brinkman 8
th on the RMAC list, as the true freshman will compete in both TJ and LJ in Gunnison.
Sophia Graber, the true freshman, would turn heads in the 800, coming off of a strong 2:22.87 at Washburn. The freshman would get off the line in the middle of the pack, coming through the first 200 in 34 high. A similar second lap would leaver her in the same position, hanging on for the latter half of the race. Graber would get past one other MSU-Denver runner, grinding out a 2:23.1. Only a second slower than her 800 at Washburn ( and at sea-level), the freshman's race would convert to a 2:20, a pointer to the freshman running extremely fast this outdoor season.
Graber sits 27
th on the RMAC Indoor list as she will eagerly await to see if she will compete at the RMAC Championships after scratches.
Ava Ackley would also race an extremely fast mile at UCCS, finishing with a 5:20 which would convert to a 5:06. On the bubble, Ackley will also wait to see if she can get into RMAC dependent on scratches in the deep mile race.
Boston, MA – The likes of
Rachel Harpt and
Kate Miller travelled to the esteemed Boston University to race at the historic track, both throwing down extremely fast times and continuing to improve on an already impressive indoor season.
Kate Miller has had her eyes set on the sub 5 mile this whole indoor season, gunning for the opportunity at any chance available. This race was no different, racing with several sub 5 milers in the field. Miller got off strong, sitting in the pack running 37 second laps. The sophomore, a natural competitor, made a glaring move at 600 meters, surging to the front of the pack to pull the heat ahead. The move would see her fastest 200 split as Miller would give everything she had to hold on the last few laps. The front of the heat would find her again, Miller finishing 6
th in her heat for a time of 5:01.3.
Miller sits 24
th on the RMAC list, an interesting spot, close to qualifying for the RMAC Championships with no guarantee. Already the second fastest miler in the record books, Miller's 5:01 improves on her last mile as she continues set eyes to be the second only Cougar to break the 5 minute mile.
Rachel Harpt has been on a tear the past 3 weeks, and this week would be no different. Competing in the mile and 3k, the Sophomore would take on the favorable double for the second time this year. Coming off of a 5:06 mile, Harpt would get out strong in a crowded heat, getting through the first 3 laps at a consistent 37 seconds. As the race progressed, Harpt would be aggressively cut off in the middle of the pack, slowing her 4
th lap down to a 39, a hard setback in the short race. Harpt, unphased, took the challenge and finished mile extremely well, kicking strong, her last lap her fastest lap. Harpt would surge to a 3
rd place finish and a 5:03 mile, moving her to the third fastest mile in CCU history.
A few hours later, Harpt would take on the longer 3k(1.86 miles), racing yet again with poise and composure. Harpt would sit in the pack, going through first mile in 5:20 and closing hard, executing the race plan perfectly and finishing 3
rd in the heat. Her second fantastic race in a few hours, Harpt would finish with a time of 9:59, the second fastest 3k in the Cougars singlet ever. A record breaking mile and 3k in the same afternoon is the perfect wrap for the end of the regular season, Harpt running her
sixth personal best in a row, an extremely hard feat in this sport.
Harpt will have her eyes set on making the RMAC 3k, currently sitting 23
rd on the list, with heat sheets coming out later this week. As the regular season comes to an end, Harpt finishes with one of the most historic seasons the Cougars have seen, an encouraging trajectory for the young sophomore.
The Cougars await the RMAC Indoor Championships lists coming out this week, looking to make a statement in the RMAC at the highest track in America. The Indoor Championships are set February 27-28
th in Gunnison, CO.
