Gunnison, CO – The Cougars took on the Indoor RMAC Championships this weekend at the highest elevated track in the country. The weekend saw strong performances to close out a historic indoor season for the Cougars.
Ella Brinkman, who has stayed in the lime light for the Cougars seems to only know how to get better. Having already shattered record after record for the Cougars, Brinkman took on the RMAC field in the Triple and Long Jump over the weekend. Having just broken the school record in the Long Jump, Brinkman jumped 17"8.25', garnering a 7
th place RMAC finish. The highlight would come in her Triple Jump, jumping 38"5', shattering the school indoor record, her
second school record broken in two meets. This landed Brinkman 4
th overall in the RMAC championships for the TJ, enough for All-Conference honors as she continues to write her name in the Cougar record books. After a historic season like this, Brinkman looks to raise the bar and truly see what she can do looking to outdoor.
Janelle DeBoer would compete in her first RMAC Championships, turning heads as the former Volleyball player. DeBoer would compete in the 200m, running a 25.46 in the prelims. The prelim race would see national provisionals from the only two racers to beat DeBoer, as she would beat two other competitors and sneak her way into the finals. DeBoer, fighting against the tight curves on the inside lane, would run a 25.75 in the finals for a 7
th place finish. Seeded 11
th going into conference, DeBoer's 7th place finish speaks volumes as she wraps up the indoor season. DeBoer will eagerly await the outdoor season to place her final stamp on the track as CCU's fastest sprinter to date.
Elana Sutton competed in the RMAC Indoor Pentathlon, seeing her best result in the Shot Put. Currently the Cougars record holder, Sutton would throw the furthest with a distance of 37"8.5' for a 1
st place finish in that event. With several strong performances across the weekend, Sutton would finish 15
th overall in the Pentathlon.
Rachel Harpt and
Kate Miller both stepped onto the line for the mile, a grueling effort at 7,723 feet. The race became a true mental battle and physical grind, with Harpt crossing in 5:24 and Miller in 5:36, good for 16th and 18th in the RMAC. Harpt wasn't done there, doubling back in the 3k (1.86 miles) in an extremely impressive turnaround after the mile. The taxing race saw multiple competitors step off mid-race, but Harpt battled through for a 10th-place finish in 11:19.
While not the post-season marks that either was looking for, Miller and Harpt each come off a historic season in multiple races, both sophomores with extremely exciting careers ahead of them as they are only bound to get faster. As the Cougars look to outdoor, these will both be competitors to look out for in the 1500m as they look to draw closer and closer to the top of the RMAC.
The distance side would close with
Lorelei Daugherty and
Alysia Wagner racing in the 5k. In a race with nationally relevant competitors, both Cougars would race the majority of the race off of the back, holding on in the long race at altitude. The race would thin out to see the Cougars hold a position near the back,
Lorelei Daugherty able to muster a strong kick to finish 12
th with a time of 18:58, Aly Wagner finishing 15
th and a time of 19:07.
Similarly, both Wagner and Daugherty come off of historic indoor seasons, littering their name in the Cougar record books. Both will look to the distance side for the outdoor season, offering both the 5k and the 10k as the Cougars look to both these runners to continue to make their mark amongst the RMAC.
The weekend would also see
Hannah Zugich compete in the 60H, running a time of 9.84 for a 17
th place finish, as Zugich finishes a strong indoor season and looks to outdoor.
The Indoor Championships see the final meet of the Indoor season for the Cougars, with the first outdoor meet on March 20
th at neighboring CSU-Pueblo, the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Invitational a historically strong race for the Cougars.
