Cougars Continue to Cement Historic Success at CU Boulder

Boulder, CO - The warm February weekend saw a small crew travel to the Buffs Indoor Track, the second time in the past three weeks. The meet saw a national provisional coupled with several strong races as the Cougars look to their final weekend before post-season.

Matthew Storer continued to shine for CCU, leading the way in the 3k (1.86 miles) for the Cougars. Competing primarily against D1 opponents & alma mater Western Colorado, Storer went out hot, sitting in the front pack with several others. Cruising through the first mile running sub 4:30 pace, Storer remained steady throughout the entire race. CSU would pull away the latter third of the race, leaving Storer in a pack with two other Western runners. A strong kick from Storer 100 meters to go would see him outkick one of the Western Runners, finishing third for a final time of 8:21, converting to 8:07 from altitude on the national list.

This time serves as a national provisional, and leaves Storer 22nd on the National list, 7th on the RMAC list. Storer's best race came from earlier in the season, running a 13:57 5k, which lands him 12th on the National List, 5th on the RMAC list, currently in position to race the 5k at the National meet. Storer has his sights set to race in Boston next week to cement his last go in Indoor Nationals.

The best performance of the weekend came from Missouri native Ethan Wampler, racing an electric 3k, dominating his heat and walking away with a heat victory. The senior displayed veteran composure and perfect execution of the race plan to dominate the field around him. With a goal of 8:40 raw, the race opened up and Wampler sat in the middle of the front pack through the first lap. As the leaders got antsy and sped up, Wampler elected to drop back and lead the chase pack, finding his rhythm through the first mile. The move was textbook, the lead pack slowly but surely coming back to Wampler as the race progressed. Staying patient, Wampler would stick to the back of the front pack until a Mesa runner would take off with 800 to go, trying to pull away. Wampler would match the move, maneuvering through traffic, hanging on until 400 meters left. Wampler would turn on the jets with a lap to go, smoking the Mesa runner and rest of the pack, winning the heat by over 4 seconds. A final time of 8:33 would convert in altitude to an 8:19, a 12 second PR for Ethan Wampler.

This leaves Wampler sitting 17th on the RMAC list, likely enough to qualify him for the RMAC Championships in Gunnison. A statement race for the thunderous senior, Ethan Wampler looks to make a statement in the most competitive conference throughout Division II.

The sprints side would continued to showcase excellence, dropping records left and right.

Ethan Nowakowski would see a historic day, entering the record books on two different occasions. He would open up in the 60 Hurdles, fighting to an 8.68 second final time, the second fastest in CCU history behind teammate Josiah Weeda. He wasn't done, running the 200 in a scorching time of 23.21. This lands him 4th in the all time 200 record for the Cougars. Nowakowski sits 24th on the RMAC list in the 60H, so will look to improve on his time to make the conference meet. The freshman no doubt will only continue to get faster, showing exciting glimpses into his future for CCU.

Allister McCasland was no different when it came to writing his own records, also racing to two different spots in the record books. McCasland opened with the 60 meter, running a 7.37, which is the 5th fastest indoor 60 in CCU history. Coming off of an excellent 400 leg in the DMR last week at Washburn, McCasland soloed the 400 meter, running a 50.93, enough to garner him the second fastest 400 ever run on an indoor track for the Cougars. Encouraging starts, McCasland will undoubtedly be looking to break 50 in the near future. Josiah Weeda also had a solid day in Boulder, running a 8.44 second 60 meter hurdle, alongside a 24.24 200 meter.

The Cougars will be back in action with a dual meet this weekend, a small crew racing in Boston, the majority of the team heading back up to RMAC foes UCCS' Indoor track. The last regular season meet of Indoor, the Cougars will look to make final adjustments to continue racing post-season.
