Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Westminster Downs Lady Cougs

For the first time in program history, the CCU women's soccer team traveled to Salt Lake City, UT to compete against Westminster College in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. Unfortunately, the game did not end in the Lady Cougars favor. CCU lost to the Griffins 2-1. Still, though the loss marked CCU's fourth this season, head coach Tammy McPherson is optimistic and proud of her squad.

"We played a bad first half. The goals Westminster scored were legit, but we definitely came out flat. We made some adjustments at half time and played great the rest of the game. There were some really nice opportunities on goal by us in the last ten minutes, but we didn't finish."

Westminster came out strong on their home turf, dominating possession and shots, with nine shots to CCU's zero in the first half. Nine minutes in, the Griffins' Madison Roemer banked a 20 yard shot into the back of the Cougars' goal. The remainder of the half was a battle for the blue and gold as they struggled to find their rhythm.

It was evident once CCU hit the field at the beginning of the second that something was different. The difference showed in their play, and in the numbers, as Colorado Christian beat out WC in shots 6-4. Six and a half minutes in, Gabriele Blahnik set up a great shot for Mariah Fredericks to set the scoreboard at 1-1. A struggle for momentum ensued after the second goal of the game, but that struggle was won over by Westminster three minutes later. With 54:20 on the clock, Rylei North scored her 4th goal of the season, assisted by Madison Roemer.

Though they fought till the very end, the Cougs were taken down by the undefeated Griffins (4-0-0). CCU is now headed to Grand Junction for their game against Colorado Mesa University on Sunday September 20 at 12 pm.
