PUEBLO, CO – The Cougars battled through darkness during the opening day before posting their second straight top five finish at the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational hosted by CSU Pueblo.
Colorado Christian posted a team score of five-under par 859 in the 54-hole event to finish in a three-way tie for the fifth position in the 12-team event. The host Thunderwolves won the event by going 28-under par (836).
FIRST ROUND RECAP: The strong scoring condition were evident after the initial 18 holes. The Cougars posted a one-under par 287 which placed them in the seventh position and just seven strokes off of Westminster's lead.
Sam Nolley posted the best round for the squad as he fired a 70 (-2) with four birdies and a pair of bogeys. Zach Slayton was just one stroke behind his teammate as he also posted a four-birdie round.
Jack Curran and Christopher Gleason each carded a one-over par 73 while Dylan Arthur rounded out the competitors for the squad with a 77 (+5).
SECOND ROUND RECAP: The round began later in the afternoon on Monday and was delayed until the next morning because of darkness. The second 18 holes saw the Cougars post their second consecutive round of 287. At two-under par for the tournament, they were 14 strokes behind CSU Pueblo's lead, as they stayed in seventh place.
Nolley and Slayton were steady as they notched rounds of 71 and 69 respectively. They were both at four-under par and tied for sixth heading into the final round. Slayton had a four-birdie effort with just one bogey while Nolley tallied four birdies, an eagle while along carding over par scores on five holes.
Gleason fired a 73 (+1) for the second straight round as he was in a four-way tie for 28th. Curran slipped with a 75 (+3) while Arthur hit another 77 (+5).
FINAL ROUND RECAP: Through the final round the Cougars bounced between the fifth and seventh position before posting a top five finish. During the round the Cougars shot a season best 285 (-3).
Slayton tallied a 74 (+2) during his final 18 holes as he recorded a team best tied for 16th place finish. Nolley nearly put together a top 20 finish but his three-over par 75 round put him in a tie for the 21st slot.
Curran posted the best final round for the team as he carded a 69 (-3) with four birdies and a bogey. Dylan Arthur had a quality final round as the freshman posted a two-under par 70 as he netted four birdies.
Gleason continue his steady played as he hoovered around par before closing with a 72 (E).
STATISCALLY SPEAKING:
- The Cougars led the tournament with 170 holes played at par
- Gleason had a tournament best 41 par holes
- Zach Slayton notched a team high 11 birdies
