PUEBLO, CO- Colorado Christian closed the regular season March 30-31 as they took on a talented field at Pueblo Country Club at the Sam Proal Invitational. Led by an individual title from
Peyton Jones and many other stellar performances, the Cougars claimed their first victory of the season as they took down runner-up and host CSU Pueblo by eight strokes, finishing 11 strokes under par overall.
ROUND ONE
Jones started strong in the first round of play, carding a 68 with four birdies and an eagle on the par 71 course.
Lance Christensen Jr. and
Bradley Mulder followed closely behind as they each shot 70s with a combined seven birdies.
Tyler Debruyckere shot a 76 and
Camron Reddell finished with a 78 to close the first round.
Cameron Cantillana and
Todd Tabor competed as individuals, posting scores of 72 and 75 respectively.
ROUND TWO
The team jumped straight into round two on the first day of play, and Jones continued his incredible play in the afternoon. The senior was lights out, firing seven birdies with just a single bogey on his way to a 6-under 65 as he sat atop the leaderboard heading into the final day of play. Mulder posted a 70, while Christensen Jr. and Reddell scored par with 71s. Debruyckere finished with a 72 to end the day.
Tabor shot an 81 followed by Cantillana with an 84 to close the second round.
ROUND THREE
Pushing for the victory on the final day of play, Jones fended off a charge by Marius Dosiere of CSU Pueblo as three birdies and an eagle gave him a 70 in the final round and the victory by one stroke at -10. It marked the third victory of the season for Jones and the first in the spring season for the native of Roswell, New Mexico. Christensen Jr. closed strong with a 68 on five birdies to claim fifth, and Mulder came right behind with a 70 to claim sixth. Reddell shot a 72 to finish in 38th, while Debruyckere closed with a 74 to claim 45th.
Cantillana and Tabor finished in a tie for 77th with a pair of 75s from the teammates to close play.
Overall, the Cougars claimed the victory by an impressive 8 strokes with a total of 841 (284, 277, 280) as they surged into the lead and never looked back at Pueblo Country Club. The Cougars took down several teams ranked ahead of them, including RMAC foes #13 CSU Pueblo and #15 Colorado Mesa. Finishing in third behind CSUP was #17 West Texas A&M. Currently sitting at #31 nationally, CCU is sure to rise in the rankings as they closed the regular season with a statement victory.
Colorado Christian now set their sights on a third straight RMAC Championship title as they head to compete against a strong field of conference foes April 19-21 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Nevada. The tournament will serve as what the Cougars hope is a tune up for the National Championships which will be held at the same course May 18-22.
