Staying Flexible

As COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on the season the Cougars got a first hand experience when the second game of the season at Westminster was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. As the season continues the Cougars will have to continue to be flexible with game plans and travel schedule in order to play as many games as possible this season with the best chance to reach the RMAC tournament. In late November, the RMAC released information about the season structure and return-to-play guidelines for basketball. All teams will have a 22-game conference schedule (non-conference play being optional), and any game that is not played due to COVID-19 issues will be declared a "no contest." All student-athletes and team support staff must test negative within 72 hours of the game, and in the state of Colorado, everyone in the arena will wear a mask except for the 10 active players on the court. An RMAC champion will be declared if at least five teams complete 50 percent of their originally approved schedule (11 games). The champion and RMAC Tournament qualifiers will be determined by use of the NCAA Division II RPI system.

Scouting Fort Lewis

Fort Lewis has played two of their scheduled three games this season. The first game of the season versus Chadron State was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns but Fort Lewis has gotten games in against both Black Hills State and Western Colorado. The Skyhawks have dropped two close games losing by three against Black Hills State and by 15 against Western. Jordan Vasquez is the leading scorer for the Skyhawks, averaging 22.0 points per game and the leading rebounder averaging 6.0 per game.

Production from the Newcomers

The Cougars are getting wonderful production from some first year players, Mara Kemmer is cementing herself in the line-up, playing for 36 minutes and scoring nine points in her Cougars debut. Christen Curry highlights how deep the Cougars are at the guard position this season playing 14 minutes and scoring two points along with two rebounds in her first game with the Cougars.

Double-Double Machine

Lourdes Gonzalez recorded her third double-double for the Cougars in the first game of the season and her second double-double in a row after recording her second in the last game of last season against Regis, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Upcoming Schedule

This weekend will be the last scheduled home game of 2020 for the Cougars. Over the Christmas break Colorado Christian with play against MSU Denver and South Dakota Mines. The Cougars will kick off 2021 with home games on January 2nd and 3rd against CSU Pueblo and Adams State.
