Flipping Over The Schedule

For the first time this season the Cougars will play a team for the second time as they host Colorado Mesa this weekend. This will also be the first time this season the Cougars have seen the Westminster Griffins after their game earlier this season was postponed due to COVID-19 test results.

Staying Flexible

Even though the season is still in its infancy the Cougars have experienced what COVID-19 can do to a season, as two games this season have been postponed due to COVID concerns and games have moved locations as well. The teams have done an excellent of finding time to reschedule the cancelled games as Colorado Christian will now play CSU Pueblo on Tuesday, February 16th at the CCU Event Center.

Production from the Newcomers

The Cougars are getting wonderful production from some first year transfers, Mara Kemmer is cementing herself in the line-up, averaging 24.4 minutes per game and 5.9 points per game. Kemmer would be one of the top three point shooters in the RMAC as she is shooting 59.1% from three, currently she does not have enough attempts per game to qualify in the RMAC.

Christen Curry highlights how deep the Cougars are at the guard position this season averaging 20.0 minutes per game and 6.4 points per game and six steals.

Freshman Riley Wade and Grace Field are also working their way into the line-up more often, with Wade averaging 10.0 minutes and 3.3 points per game. Field, who joined the team at the start of the new year has played in all three games the Cougars have played in this semester.

Cougar Ranks in the RMAC

The Cougars are the fifth best defensive team in the RMAC 64.4 points per game. Lourdes Gonzalez is second in the RMAC in shooting, with a 58.5% shooting percentage. Brookelyn Hurlbut and Gonzalez are 8th and 9th in the RMAC averaging 9.2 and 8.4 rebounds per game respectively.

Head Coach – Corey Laster
The 2020-21 season will be Corey Laster's fifth at Colorado Christian.

Laster has been a collegiate coach for the last 20 years, dating back to 2000 where he started his career at his alma mater, Taylor University (IN). Laster ran a successful program at Taylor from 2000-03 (51-31). After Taylor, Corey moved up to the NCAA DII level where he became an assistant coach for Saint Michaels (VT) from 2003-05. Laster was then able to take over his own program in the NCAA DIII level at Defiance (OH) from 2005-07.

From 2007-10 Corey Laster took the assistant coaching position at Bucknell in Lewisburg, PA, an NCAA DI program. Wanting to become a head coach once again, Laster claimed the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball program from 2010-14. Laster was a part of the RMAC for four years building a strong program for the Mountain Lions.

Ground Rules

In late November, the RMAC released information about the season structure and return-to-play guidelines for basketball. All teams will have a 22-game conference schedule (non-conference play being optional), and any game that is not played due to COVID-19 issues will be declared a "no contest." All student-athletes and team support staff must test negative within 72 hours of the game, and in the state of Colorado, everyone in the arena will wear a mask except for the 10 active players on the court. An RMAC champion will be declared if at least five teams complete 50 percent of their originally approved schedule (11 games). The champion and RMAC Tournament qualifiers will be determined by use of the NCAA Division II RPI system.
