DENVER – A quick start. Some nervous moments in the middle. Ultimately the Cougars came away with what they wanted.
Colorado Christian jumped out a five-run lead but scored a pair late which proved to be the difference as they registered a 9-7 win against CSU Pueblo.
The game was the third of four on the weekend for the Cougars in an RMAC Pod hosted by MSU Denver.
HOW IT HAPPENED: CSU Pueblo scored the first run of the contest on a solo homerun from Trey Vasquez in the second inning. That lead was short lived for the Thunderwolves as Manny Thompson connected on his first collegiate homerun in the bottom half of the frame. The rightfielder smashed a three-run shot to left centerfield to give his team a 3-1 edge.
The score remained that way until the fourth inning when Eli Ludwig hit a base knock to score Tommy Orr. Colorado Christian padded their lead to 7-1 in the fifth frame. Drew Lloyd starting the scoring with a sacrifice fly then run scoring singles from Caden Walton and Orr seemingly put the Cougars in a comfortable spot.
The Thunderwolves made the closing innings anything but comfortable as they scored five runs in the sixth inning before tying the contest with a RBI groundout in the seventh stanza.
Jordan Medina made sure there wasn't a comeback. The catcher nailed a two-out, two-run homerun to left field for the winning runs. CSU Pueblo did bring the tying run to the plate with two outs but JC Watne got the final out to secure the win.
COUGAR LEADERS: Medina had his third three-hit day of the season as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Walton contributed a pair of hits to the Cougars 10-hit attack.
Watne earned the win on the mound with 3.0 innings of work with a pair of strikeouts. Cameron Spaeth started the contest before giving way to Watne.
