LAKEWOOD, CO – Thursday afternoon felt like what opening day should feel like.
While the hometown Rockies won their major league baseball season opener, just a few miles down at the road at the ballpark inspired by its MLB brethren, Colorado Christian registered a 6-3 victory on a sun bathed day at All Star Park against Colorado School of Mines.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougars put three runs on the scoreboard with three two-out hits in the second inning. Caden Walton and Eli Ludwig each had RBI doubles to centerfield to give the Cougars a 2-0 cushion early in the contest. Manny Thompson followed those two baggers who an RBI single for the home team's third run.
Colorado School of Mines got a run back when Luke Folsom hit a deep drive off the left centerfield fence that scored I-Ly Hsue with two outs in the third inning. The Cougars shrugged off the solo run as Caden Walton ripped a double down the third baseline which scored Jordan Medina and Blake Mattey for 5-1 after the third inning.
Another solo run in the fourth inning got the Orediggers within 5-2 but the home got that back in the sixth stanza when Medina's RBI single up the middle scored Frankie Shearn III. The one-run per inning theme continued for the Orediggers as they pulled within 6-3 in the seventh frame.
Colorado School of Mines missed a golden opportunity in the eighth inning as they loaded bases with no outs but couldn't cross the plate.
While the Cougars offense was putting together enough runs for the victory, head coach Paul Koss worked the bullpen as he sent six pitchers to the top of the hill. After starter Tyler Henning worked three innings, Devin Sutorious ultimately earned the win after pitching the fifth and sixth innings while JC Watne earned the save by getting the final five outs.
